A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly shooting a 17-year-old in the head, police said.

The 17-year-old is “no longer exhibiting brain activity and is not expected to survive,” according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Police arrested Jose Camargo Madrigal, 41, and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The shooting occurred Saturday night near 3056 Mansfield Highway after the victim’s vehicle was involved in a collision with a Chevy Avalanche, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. Both vehicles were stopped at a red light near Mansfield Highway and Seminary Drive when an occupant of the Avalanche began shooting at the victim’s vehicle. The driver of the victim’s vehicle drove away and pulled into a nearby gas station after realizing the 17-year-old was unresponsive, police said.

The shooter’s vehicle drove away, police said. Officers used license plate reading cameras to identify it, police said. The car was registered to Camargo Madrigal. Police later stopped Camargo Madrigal during a traffic stop and interviewed him, during which he admitted to firing multiple rounds into the back of a dark-colored pickup, according to the affidavit.
