Arlington police have arrested a suspect accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her unborn child in a shooting along Interstate 20 last month.

Homicide detectives obtained warrants for the arrest of 29-year-old Malik Miner on one count of capital murder, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of deadly conduct, police said in a news release Thursday. Members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force took Miner into custody Wednesday in Midlothian.

The shooting occurred on Nov. 12. A 28-year-old man called police about 7:40 p.m. to report that he and his girlfriend had been shot while driving westbound on I-20 near Bowman Springs Road. The man pulled off the freeway into a parking lot in the 4900 block of Little Road, where first responders met the victims.

The man’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Bre’Asia Johnson, was found unresponsive in the passenger’s seat. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound. Detectives learned that Johnson was pregnant.

Her boyfriend was hospitalized with serious injuries. He has since been released from the hospital, police said.

The man’s two children were in the back seat of the car when the shooting occurred. They were also taken to the hospital to be checked out by doctors, but were not seriously injured, police said.

Family members wrote in a GoFundMe post that Johnson shielded the children from the gunfire.

Johnson was five months pregnant and the mother of three children, ages 7, 6, and 2, her family said in the GoFundMe post.

“Bre’Asia’s final, selfless act was to protect the very children she loved with all her heart,” her family wrote. “Tragically, her children are now left behind, without their mother, and the unborn child will never have the chance to know the love and warmth Bre’Asia was so ready to give.”

Police said a second vehicle also was hit by the gunfire, but its occupants were not injured and are not believed to have any involvement in the incident.

Detectives say suspect followed victims

In their investigation, homicide detectives spoke to witnesses and reviewed video footage. They determined the shooting was targeted and not the result of road rage, according to the release.

Police said they learned that Miner was previously in a romantic relationship with Johnson and had been feuding with her current boyfriend, the 28-year-old man.

Detectives served a search warrant at Miner’s home and seized multiple items, including his cellphone. A review of his phone revealed that he’d had previous communication with the male victim.

Detectives also compared cellphone location records from Miner’s and Johnson’s phones, which placed Miner at the crime scene when the shooting occurred and showed that his movements were nearly identical to Johnson’s movements in the minutes leading up to the shooting, police said. The phone location records suggest that Miner followed the victims’ vehicle that night.

Miner declined to speak to investigators following his arrest, police said. He was in the Arlington City Jail on Thursday. It’s unclear whether he has a defense attorney to represent him in the case.
