A 24-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday during a fight over the right-of-way in a North Texas parking lot, and two suspects from Mississippi have been arrested, police said.

Denton police officers responded to the 300 block of West Eagle Drive about 1 a.m., after a 911 caller reported a fight in the parking lot. While on the phone with dispatchers, the caller heard gunshots, police said in a news release.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Luis Fernando Carranza.

Witnesses told police that two suspects had fled in a vehicle, which officers stopped in the 1400 block of W. University Drive, police said.

A man, later identified as 26-year-old Alfred Jackson Jr. from Mississippi, ran from officers during the traffic stop. Jackson was apprehended a short time later and arrested for evading arrest or detention, police said.

A woman, later identified as 24-year-old Olivia Guster from Mississippi, remained with the vehicle and was detained as part of the shooting investigation, police said.

Fight led to shooting, Denton cops say

Investigators determined that Jackson, Guster, the victim and the victim’s friend were involved in an argument over a right-of-way issue in the parking lot, police said.

Police said the argument turned into a fight when Jackson hit Carranza’s friend with a shovel. Guster also attacked both Carranza and his friend, police said.

Investigators determined that Jackson shot Carranza and pointed the gun at his friend before running away with Guster, who drove them from the scene, police said.
