A North Texas family is mourning the death of a father of five who was killed in a hit-and-run in Benbrook. Police are searching for the driver who fled the scene.

Benbrook police officers responded to the crash near the 6400 block of Southwest Boulevard (Texas 183), about 1 a.m. on Sept. 13, after several 911 callers reported a hit-and-run , police said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an unresponsive man lying in the middle of the highway with several severe injuries, police said.

The man, identified as 62-year-old Walter H. Brown Sr., was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

“Our family is devastated beyond words,” Brown’s children wrote in a GoFundMe post.

“We are Walter’s five children, and we are broken. Dad was supposed to call when he got home early Saturday morning. Instead, at 1:34 a.m., his brother in Christ called us with the words we’ll never forget, ‘Hit-and-run. Your father’s gone,’” the family’s post read.

According to a witness statement, Brown had gotten out of his car after it ran out of gas on the highway, and he was then struck by a red pickup truck, which sped up and fled the scene without stopping, police said.

The red pickup truck continued driving northwest on 183. During their investigation, officers found parts of the truck with partial identifying information, police said.

“No more off-key renditions of ‘Precious Lord’ at church. No more sermons about faith over fried chicken. No more late-night fridge raids, unexpected calls, or his laughter filling our homes,” Brown’s children wrote in the GoFundMe post.

“Now, it’s just us — five kids — holding on to memories and facing a funeral bill we can hardly fathom. Your prayers, love, and support are carrying us through. Please know that every gift, every prayer, feels like a hug back to us,” the post read.
