Storm kills 1 at North Texas RV park, damages Walmart distribution center
A storm on Sunday evening killed a woman at a North Texas RV park, damaged a Walmart distribution center and overturned multiple 18-wheelers that blocked traffic on Interstate 35 near Sanger, officials with the Denton County Office of Emergency Management said.
The first calls of a severe storm were received at 5:25 p.m. and the first reports of damage were received within minutes.
A 45- to 50-foot hole was reported in the roof of the Walmart Distribution Center at 2120 N. Stemmons St. in Sanger, Emergency Management Director Samantha Taylor said in an email. No injuries were reported at the Walmart center, and all employees were dismissed to go home, Taylor said.
Across the freeway at McClain’s Longhorn RV in the Sanger/Denton North KOA campground, several RVs overturned and a woman was sent to Denton Presbyterian Hospital with critical injuries, Taylor said. Family members told WFAA-TV that the injured woman died at the hospital. Her family identified her as 79-year-old Rosemary Mcaninch.
Three semi-tractor trailers were overturned on northbound I-35 south of Sanger at Ganzer Road, shutting down all traffic, Taylor said.
The Denton County Office of Emergency Management sent its Goliath mobile communications command center to the City of Sanger to support operations, Taylor said.
