In spasm of violence in Fort Worth, 5 victims dead in shootings across the city
Five people were shot to death on Sunday in Fort Worth at four locations across the city, authorities said.
The last of the killings, which occurred over about 20 hours, was a double homicide about 8:45 p.m. in the 8400 block of Asheville Lane.
Billy Gipson, 16, was pronounced dead at John Peter Smith Hospital, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. The second victim, identified in an arrest warrant affidavit as 25-year-old Jaylan Sharp, died at the scene.
Police on Monday booked Marquavius Hunt, 17, on suspicion of capital murder of multiple persons in the Asheville Lane killings.
Gipson and Sharp had been involved in an argument and fight in front of a residence on Asheville Lane, in south Fort Worth, police said. Gipson had a rifle and fired at least one shot toward Sharp, and they began to struggle over the rifle, according to the affidavit. Hunt then pulled a handgun and fired multiple times, shooting both victims, police said.
Hunt, Gipson and a witness got into a pickup truck and drove to where a nearby ambulance picked up Gipson, police said. Officers stopped the truck shortly afterward, and Hunt, a witness and another person were detained for questioning before Hunt was arrested.
Three homicides Sunday morning
The first homicide Sunday occurred about 12:30 a.m. at a house party on North Houston Street, on the city’s north side. Anthony Rangel, 19, died of gunshot wounds of the torso and forearm, according to the medical examiner’s office. Two other people were shot at the same time.
No arrest has been announced in the case.
Anthony Rangel had celebrated his birthday earlier in the week, but the party was for someone’s graduation, his aunt Lucy Rangel said. She said Anthony was not the intended target.
Detectives determined that the shooting happened after two women at the party began arguing over one of the victims. Unidentified suspects then arrived at the house, and one of them got into a fight with a victim, police said. The suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking the three victims. The shooter fled in a vehicle.
Matthew Fonseca, 24, died after he was shot multiple times about 3:30 a.m. outside a residence in the 3000 block of Conejos Drive, in west Fort Worth, according to an affidavit supporting the arrest on suspicion of murder of Jonathan Martinez, also 24.
In an interview with homicide detectives, Martinez admitted to shooting Fonseca, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. Martinez told the detectives that someone, whose name is redacted from the document, called Martinez and said that Fonseca had assaulted Martinez’s former girlfriend.
Martinez said he went to the house at which he was told Fonseca would be and saw him parked in the driveway. Martinez told police that he “blacked out and began shooting at [Fonseca],” according to the affidavit. After the shooting, Martinez threw his gun into Lake Worth, the suspect said.
Two people told detectives they went to the location to retrieve a cellphone from Fonseca. When they arrived, they found him dead and called 911, they told police.
Martinez later called one of the people and said, “I got you,” according to the affidavit.
In the third Sunday morning killing, James Marshall, 28, was shot about 9 a.m. after an argument in the back yard of a house in the 3000 block of Forest Avenue on the city’s east side. No arrest has been announced in that case.
