Man charged with murder in shooting death after argument, Fort Worth police say
Fort Worth police have arrested a suspect in a fatal backyard shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of May 23.
Joseph Jones, 43, is accused of killing 34-year-old Adam Goins after an argument in the back yard of a home in the 11200 block of Golden Triangle Circle, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram.
A resident of the home told police that Goins had come over to borrow a charger for his tablet when Jones arrived with the mother of Goins’ children and another unidentified man, according to the affidavit. Goins became upset that the woman had arrived with the other men and began hitting things with a golf club in the back yard, police said.
Goins was upset because he believed that the woman had been romantically involved with Jones in the past, and the two began arguing, according to the affidavit. During the argument, Goins swung the golf club at Jones, a witness told police.
The resident was able to get Goins calmed down and ready to leave when he saw Jones leave the back yard, then return with a “high-powered pellet rifle” that belonged to the unnamed man, according to the affidavit. Jones aimed the rifle at Goins and shot once, missing him, witnesses told police.
The unnamed man told Jones not to shoot, but Jones shot again and hit Goins in the chest, according to the affidavit.
When a witness asked Jones why he had shot Goins, Jones said Goins should not have swung the golf club at him, according to the affidavit. Jones later left the scene on foot, witnesses said.
Jones was arrested on a parole violation on May 29, according to the affidavit. When interviewed by homicide detectives, Jones denied involvement, but later admitted to shooting at Goins twice before recanting his statement, according to the affidavit.
Goins was pronounced dead in the back yard shortly after paramedics arrived, the Star-Telegram previously reported.
Jones has been booked into the Tarrant County Jail and faces charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records. His bond has been set at $200,000.
