Fort Worth murder suspect told witnesses he ‘blacked out’ and killed girlfriend: warrant
Fort Worth police have identified a man accused of killing his girlfriend and leading dozens of officers on a chase on Monday night.
Dylan McLean Jones, 29, is accused of fatally shooting a woman who lived with him, who witnesses said was his girlfriend, according to police. A warrant and the medical examiner identified the victim as 28-year-old Ariel Levy.
Jones told witnesses that he thought he hurt or killed Levy while was he was “blacked out,” according to the arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram. Parts of the document also refer to Levy as Jones’ roommate.
Jones was driving the victim’s SUV and had her phone when officers pursued him for 38 minutes, police said. The chase ended in Hurst when Jones crashed and was tased by police, according to a department news release.
The investigation began around 3:15 p.m. Monday when officers responded to Jones’ and Levy’s apartment on Ipswich Avenue, in far north Fort Worth. A witness had requested a welfare check on Levy after Jones said he thought he had harmed her, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
Police said they were unable to make contact with anyone at the apartment at that time and they left.
About 6:15 p.m., officers responded to another witness’ home, in the 6300 block of Stockton Drive, in south Fort Worth. The caller told police that Jones showed up at the house and said he had killed Levy.
A witness described seeing “what she believed to be blood underneath” Jones’ fingernails, the affidavit states.
While police were talking with witnesses on Stockton Drive, Jones was seen driving by in Levy’s black Ford SUV and officers tried to stop him, the affidavit states.
The high-speed chase began along Loop 820 and ended near a Lowe’s store on Texas 26 (Grapevine Highway) east of Precinct Line Road in Hurst, police said.
Jones sped through a residential area at up to 90 mph, weaved through traffic, ran multiple stop signs and red lights, drove on the wrong side of the road, and drove onto the shoulder of the freeway to pass other cars, according to the affidavit.
While police tried to capture Jones, other officers went back to his apartment, where they found Levy’s body in the bedroom with an apparent gunshot wound, the warrant states.
“Ariel was a wonderful person. She left a positive impact on everyone she came across,” her family told WFAA-TV in a statement. “We are thankful to have had the opportunity to see her grow up and are devastated that was taken away from her. Ariel was a best friend to everyone in the family, and loved so dearly.”
Jones tried to evade over 20 “fully marked patrol vehicles with emergency lights and sirens activated” until the SUV was disabled when officers used a tire-deflation device, the affidavit states.
Jones had a handgun when he was taken into custody, which matched the type of shell casing found near the victim’s body, police said. He is expected to face charges of capital murder and evading arrest.
Results of an autopsy are pending to officially determine Levy’s cause and manner of death and when she died.
