Video shows Fort Worth woman chase & ram SUV, causing crash that killed boyfriend: warrant
A Fort Worth woman chased and repeatedly rammed an SUV in which her boyfriend was a passenger, causing a crash that killed him, according to videos and witness statements reviewed by police.
Miguel Angel Moreno, 34, was killed in the crash Saturday afternoon and his brother-in-law was seriously injured, Fort Worth police wrote in an affidavit supporting an arrest warrant for the suspect. Moreno’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Emily Garcia, was arrested on Monday and faces a murder charge.
Garcia told police that she was driving a gold Chevrolet Tahoe with Moreno in the passenger seat when they argued and he got out of the Tahoe.
Video from a surveillance camera and a witness’ cellphone shows Moreno walking along Northeast 28th Street and trying to avoid Garcia, who is following him in the Tahoe, according to the affidavit. Moreno was talking on a cellphone and trying to hide between cars in a parking lot while Garcia drove erratically around the area, investigators wrote.
Moreno apparently called his brother-in-law, who arrived in a brown Chevrolet Trailblazer to pick him up, police said. Moreno ran and got into the front passenger seat of the Trailblazer, and immediately afterward Garcia intentionally crashed into the passenger side of the Trailblazer, according to the warrant.
The Trailblazer sped away and Garcia followed, at times driving on the wrong side of the road, and she continued to hit the back end of the Trailblazer with her SUV until the driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole in the 3400 block of NE 28th Street, detectives wrote.
Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash about 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. His brother-in-law was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.
When the first officers arrived, Garcia was at the scene of the fatal crash with her Tahoe parked in the median. The Tahoe had front-end damage and a missing bumper, police said. The Trailblazer also hit a Nissan Sentra before crashing into the pole, police said.
Garcia told detectives that Moreno had been her boyfriend for about four months, according to the arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram.
In her interview with the detectives, Garcia initially said that she was driving in the area and she saw the accident through her rear-view mirror and she stopped her car and found her unresponsive boyfriend at the scene, according to the affidavit.
Garcia later admitted to detectives that she and Moreno had been driving in her Tahoe before the crash happened, the affidavit states. She said when they argued and she stopped near a store, Moreno took her cellphone and ran away, so she chased the other SUV to try to get her phone back.
Detectives searched Garcia’s Tahoe and found the described Samsung cellphone with a Hello Kitty sticker in her vehicle, which determined that her statement about Moreno taking her phone was not true, according to the affidavit.
Garcia acknowledged that a car can be used as deadly weapon and in this case her actions were “clearly dangerous” and caused Moreno’s death, according to the affidavit.
Moreno was his mom’s only son and “the sweetest brother, uncle, cousin, and friend we ever had,” his sister wrote on a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses.
“Everyone that came in contact with him loved him,” the GoFundMe page states. “He always made sure to show up for everyone.”
Bond for Garcia has not been set, and it’s not clear whether she has obtained a defense attorney to represent her.
