Man sentenced to 25 years for murder of teen on Fort Worth-area road, officials say
A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to the 2020 murder of a teen in Crowley, officials say.
Quinton Hicks also pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was given a 25-year prison sentence as part of a plea deal, according to court records.
On May 29, 2020, Caleb Chambers left his father’s house in Crowley around 11:30 p.m. with his brother and two others. The 17-year-old from Strong, Arkansas, was in the area visiting his father and other family members like he did every summer.
The group stopped first at Taco Bell and then headed to 7-Eleven to buy drinks, Caleb’s father, Darrough Chambers, told the Star-Telegram in a 2020 phone interview. When Caleb got out of the vehicle at 7-Eleven, he was confronted by two men who were standing near the front door with the clerk.
The men exchanged words with Caleb, but there wasn’t a physical fight, Darrough Chambers said. The Arkansas teen entered the store, but when he was walking back to his brother’s car, one of the men pulled out a rifle and fired into the air four or five times.
“My other son got out of his car, ran up to the suspects and told them they didn’t want any problems,” Darrough Chambers said.
Caleb and the others in his group drove away from 7-Eleven, but the two men followed their vehicle and opened fire. Caleb, who was sitting in the backseat, was wounded. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.
The first suspect, Donell Lewie, was arrested in Arkansas in June 2020 in connection with Caleb Chambers’ murder. Lewie was sentenced in January to 45 years in prison after he also pleaded guilty to murder, according to Tarrant County court records.
Hicks was arrested in January 2021, according to a social media post from the Crowley Police Department.
Crowley police also announced Hicks’ sentencing on social media Friday.
“Today, our thoughts are with Caleb’s family and friends,” the post reads.
