Murder suspect accused of killing teen in Fort Worth suburb arrested in Arkansas

A man accused in the shooting death of a teen in Crowley last month was in custody Friday after being arrested in Arkansas, Crowley police said.

Donell “D’Lo” Lewie, 30, was captured Thursday in Arkansas and taken into custody on a murder warrant accusing him in the shooting death of 17-year-old Caleb Chambers of Strong, Arkansas.

Chambers had been visiting his father and family last month in Crowley when he was shot and killed.

The search for a second suspect, 21-year-old Quinton Hicks, continued on Friday.

Lewie was in the Washington County Jail in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday, awaiting extradition to Texas.

Crowley police did not release any further details on the arrest.

But police thanked residents who passed on information on the homicide, and said the arrest was the result of work from Fort Worth police, the U.S. Marshals Service, Texas Rangers and Little Rock, Arkansas police.

As in previous years, Chambers was in Crowley to spend the summer with his father and other relatives, his father said in a telephone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram last week.

“That night Caleb, my other son and I had arrived from Arlington,” Darrough Chambers said. “Caleb asked me for $20 to get some food, and I handed him a $10.”

That was about 11:30 p.m. on May 29.

Caleb Chambers, his brother and two others left the family’s Crowley home, stopped at a Taco Bell for food and drove to a 7-Eleven for drinks.

At the 7-Eleven, Caleb Chambers got out of the car and he was confronted by the two suspects, who were standing near the front door with the clerk, his father said. The suspects exchanged words with Caleb Chambers, but there wasn’t a physical fight.

The Arkansas teen went into the store and he was walking back to his brother’s car when one of the suspects went to their vehicle, pulled out a rifle and shot into the air at least four to five times, Darrough Chambers said.

“My other son got out of his car, ran up to the suspects and told them they didn’t want any problems,” Darrough Chambers said.

Caleb Chambers and his brother got back into their vehicle and drove away from the 7-Eleven.

But the suspects got into their vehicle, followed the Chambers’ car and opened fire, hitting Caleb Chambers, who was in the backseat of the vehicle, according to his father and police. At some point, someone in the Chambers’ car returned fire.

At 11:57 p.m. on May 29, Crowley officers responded to a call about the shooting, which took place near Farm-to-Market Roads 1187 and 731.
