Teen killed in Fort Worth suburb ‘got involved with wrong crowd,’ grandmother says
Madison Fisher-Brenes was the center of the universe.
At least that’s what Sandi King believes about her first grandchild.
The 17-year-old, who lived in Euless, didn’t have to wonder how much her family loved her, day after day, because she held a special place in their hearts.
On Thursday, her family held a funeral in Paris, Texas for Madison, who was shot and killed almost a week ago near a Bedford pharmacy. Paris is about 130 miles northeast of Bedford.
“She got involved with the wrong crowd and paid for it with her life,” King said Friday in a telephone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Chasing that ‘fast money’ got her murdered.”
A search continued Friday for the person who killed the 17-year-old girl during a drug deal last weekend, according to police.
Fisher-Brenes, who was a former Trinity High School student, would have turned 18 on Sept. 1.
Friends and family members have started a fundraiser for the teen’s family. They are selling T-shirts and hooded jackets with her name, “Madison Grace,” written on them.
King said Friday the heartache, pain, anger and sadness have been hard to describe these past few days.
“She was taken from us way too soon,” King said. She helped her daughter raise Madi, as the family called her at times.
“Did we make mistakes? Sure we did. We are human,” King said.
The teen died from a gunshot wound to her chest after a sale of marijuana vape cartridges went wrong, Bedford police said.
The shooting occurred about 6:15 p.m. Aug. 1 near a CVS pharmacy at 601 N. Industrial Blvd., Bedford police said.
Bedford detectives have viewed video surveillance from nearby businesses in an effort to identify the suspects and their vehicle.
Through the investigation, detectives learned that Fisher-Brenes and a female companion had made arrangements through social media to meet two males to sell THC vape cartridges.
The victim and her friend met the two males in the parking lot of CVS. One of the suspects got into a car with the two girls, Bedford police said.
At some point, an argument ensued and the victim was shot.
“She was 5 feet tall and barely 100 pounds. She wasn’t armed,” King said. “How could anyone consider her a threat?”
Bedford police believe the suspects arrived in a silver four-door car, but authorities did not have any other details to release as of Friday.
Fisher-Brenes was a junior at Trinity High School during the 2018-19 school year, according to H-E-B school records. She was enrolled for a month in her senior year at the school during the 2019-20 school year.
“She held a very, very special place in our hearts that will now forever be empty,” King said. “The hurt is so bad, like your heart is literally going to explode.”
