‘It made me upset,’ says Fort Worth gunshot victim who chased suspect with baseball bat
A 64-year-old Fort Worth man became aggravated Monday morning after being shot in the leg by a man near a phone store.
So what did he do?
He chased the suspected gunman in a car and then on foot with a baseball bat.
“It made me upset,” the 64-year-old said Tuesday in a phone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He is not being identified because of concerns about possible retaliation.
The suspect, Julian Rojas, 21, of Fort Worth, was arrested Monday after Fort Worth police arrived to end the chase.
Rojas was in the Tarrant County Jail on Tuesday in lieu of $75,000 bond.
The 21-year-old Fort Worth man faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The victim said Tuesday he didn’t want to discuss details of the incident until he completes interviews with Fort Worth detectives.
But the 64-year-old Fort Worth man said his neighborhood in south Fort Worth, where he grew up, has changed.
“I have no idea what he was trying to do,” the victim said when asked about the motive for the shooting.
Fort Worth police responded to the shooting call just before 10 a.m. Monday in the 2100 block of South Jennings Avenue.
The pursuit began in the 1000 block of East Berry Street.
The victim and a man later identified as Julian Rojas were at Metro PCS and got into a fight at the store, Fort Worth police said. Rojas is accused of wounding the victim in the leg.
Rojas got into his car and drove off, police said. He was followed by the victim, who got into his own vehicle.
Near West Rosedale Street and College Avenue, the suspect is accused of again firing a shot at the victim, but he missed, police said.
Both drove to the 2100 block of South Jennings Avenue, where they stopped.
The suspect got out and ran while the victim — armed with a baseball bat — chased him, Fort Worth police said.
Police officers arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect.
The wounded victim was taken to a local hospital
“This neighborhood just isn’t the same,” the victim said. “I raised my kids the right way.”
