Family says 12-year-old boy saved his mom, nephew before he was hit by a van and died

The family of a 12-year-old boy who died after being hit by a van in Carrollton says the boy pushed his mother and nephew out of the way of the van before his was hit.

The family has started a GoFundMe page seeking donations to defray the costs of the funeral for Victor Garcia and any other expenses his family might face.

As of Tuesday, the family had raised nearly $13,000 toward a goal of $15,000.

Garcia was hit while walking home from the store with his mother and nephew after buying items for the family’s holiday meal, the family says in the GoFundMe post.

The family says on the GoFundMe page that Garcia was able to push his mother and nephew out of the way before he was hit by the van.

Garcia was walking on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of South Josey Lane shortly before 1 p.m. with his mother and a 7-year-old relative when the driver of the van went off the road, police said.

The 7-year-old boy was slightly injured, police said. The mother was not hit, according to police.

The driver of the van stopped and is cooperating with the investigation, telling investigators he swerved to avoid another vehicle that had stopped unexpectedly in front of him.

The Carrollton Police Department is working to provide resources for the Garcia family.

Carrollton Fire-Rescue took Garcia to Medical City Las Colinas in Irving, where he was pronounced dead.
