This Keller taco shop puts mouthwatering twists on classic birria tacos
Restaurants have gone viral for their tender, cheesy birria quesa-tacos. But have you heard of birria egg rolls or birria grilled cheese?
A North Texas food truck called the Avila Taco Food Truck started serving twists on the classic Mexican favorite in 2021.
Last month, the brick-and-mortar Avila Taco opened in Keller.
While taco is in the name, this restaurant serves more than the standard tortilla-wrapped birria. We are talking birria ramen, birria mac and cheese, and birria baked potatoes.
Birria meat is traditionally goat but also can be made with beef, pork or lamb. Avila Tacos makes beef birria, but also serves a less-traditional chicken birria option.
This family-owned business is located at 1540 Keller Parkway in Keller. So instead of chasing down a food truck, here’s what you can get at the new primary location.
Avila Taco Keller menu
Like we said, Avila Taco serves the standard birria tacos and quesadillas, but the menu also includes specialty fusion items.
All birria items can be made with beef or chicken, and are always served with a side of consommé:
- Birria Grilled Cheese: thick Texas toast with melted jack cheese and birria served with a side of fries.
- Birria Mac & Cheese: Birria folded into housemade Mac & Cheese.
- Birria Ramen: Birria meat and ramen noodles in the consommé.
- Birria Baked Potato: Baked potato with clarified butter, birria, housemade queso, beans, sour cream and three different salsas.
- Birria Egg rolls: Birria and jack cheese rolled into crispy egg roll wrappers.
- Avila Burger: beef burger topped with birria pico de gallo, guacamole, fresh queso, avocado cream and crispy tortilla strips.
Avila Taco also serves non-birria items. Taco options include carne asada, steak quesa-tacos and al pastor tacos. Grilled burritos include a choice of chicken, steak, carne asada, al pastor or birria and a crispy shelled taco salad bowl.
What we tried at Avila Taco
When I went to Avila Taco I tried to order birria items that I have never had before.
The chicken birria sparked my interest, since it’s not a traditional option. I wanted to find out if chicken birria was like the popular Tex-Mex chicken tinga style. (Chicken tinga is shredded chicken cooked in a tomato and chipotle pepper based sauce. Birria is meat slow-cooked in a chili-based consommé stew).
I also had to try a specialty birria item: I saw lots of chatter in the Fort Worth Foodies Facebook Group about the Birria egg rolls.
Here’s the full breakdown of what I got.
- Chicken Quesabirria: shredded birria chicken in melty jack cheese folded in a crispy flour tortilla. The flavors reminded me of a richer chicken tinga — so if you like chicken tinga, you’ll love this. It’s a great option for those who want birria but don’t want something as heavy as beef. However, if you are trying birria for the first time, go with the beef.
- Birria egg rolls: Huge. These egg rolls are huge. The crispy egg roll wrapper with the soft, tender birria beef and melty jack cheese is a glorious texture combination. As for the flavor, it tastes just like a birria taco. You can’t go wrong with ordering these. They could even be ordered as one’s full meal rather than just an appetizer, similar to flautas.
