New ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff about Kayce Dutton strangely gets a new title

Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff has a new title.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Wednesday that the Kayce Dutton-led series “Y: Marshals” has dropped the “Y” and will go on as simply “Marshals.” The CBS series premieres on Sunday, March 1.

In the show, Luke Grimes reprises his role as the youngest Dutton sibling, who leaves the ranch to join the U.S. Marshals. As an ex-Navy Seal, Kayce will use his military and cowboy skills to fight crime in Montana, according to the show’s description.

Here’s what to know about the name change.

Why did CBS change the show’s title?

CBS told The Hollywood Reporter that “Y: Marshals” was the show’s working title, and it has only recently been finalized as “Marshals.” The “Y” is, of course, in reference to the mothership show “Yellowstone.” The letter in earlier promotional materials was stylized like the fictional ranch’s brand.

When the new show was announced in May 2025, CBS said “Y: Marshals” was the working title.

However, in subsequent press materials ever since, the show carried the “Y: Marshals” name with no mention of it being a working title anymore, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show’s latest trailer, released in late November, carries the same name.

Furthermore, CBS told the publication that the “Y” was always considered silent internally and that going forward it will remain in the show’s logo.

What is ‘Marshals’ about?

Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Yellowstone” season 5 below.

“Marshals” picks up after the events of “Yellowstone” season 5, which sees Kayce sell most of his family ranch to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) for a fraction of the price.

Kayce was able to keep East Camp and is last seen working cattle with his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) on the property. Merrill will return as Kayce’s son Tate, in addition to Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.

There has been no word on if Asbille will reprise her role as Monica in the new show.

Several of the executive producers behind “Yellowstone” are also back on board for “Marshals,” including Taylor Sheridan, David Glasser, Art Linson and John Linson. Spencer Hudnut serves as showrunner and executive producer on the show.

“Marshals” premieres March 1 on CBS.
