Netflix’s ‘The Wrong Paris’ is set in Texas, filmed in Canada. How Texan is it?

One of Netflix’s most-watched films this week is set right here in the Lone Star state.

“The Wrong Paris” follows Dawn (Miranda Cosgrove) as she joins a dating show thinking it’s set in Paris, France, but it’s actually located in Paris, Texas. The romantic comedy released on the streamer on Sept. 12.

While set in Texas, the movie was primarily filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, according to Netflix’s Tudum.

Nevertheless, “The Wrong Paris” contains a multitude of references to Texas. Here’s a look at how Texan the film actually is.

Editor’s note: Light spoilers for “The Wrong Paris” below.

Texas references in ‘The Wrong Paris’

Honey Grove

Dawn lives in Honey Grove, Texas, which is a real place.

Dubbed “the sweetest town in Texas,” Honey Grove is located in Fannin County and is home to nearly 3,000 residents. A joke in the film is that Honey Grove is just down the road from Paris. That’s true; the town is a mere 22 miles west.

Piggly Wiggly

While Piggly Wiggly isn’t a Texas-founded or Texas-based company, the grocery store chain is known around the South.

Dawn’s sister Emily (Emilija Baranac) asks her for a ride into town so she can stop by the local Piggly Wiggly. In reality, there’s only one Piggly Wiggly in the entire state of Texas. It’s in Athens, which is more than 100 miles south of Honey Grove.

Dairy Queen

One of Dawn’s old flames asks her to give him one last shot. Dawn says no to his plea and mentions that she knows “for a fact that you’ve been dating Tammy from the DQ.”

“DQ” is in reference to the burger chain Dairy Queen. Founded in Illinois, a majority of the company’s stores are located in Texas. There are no Dairy Queens in Honey Grove, but there are some in nearby Bonham and Paris.

Dallas

The dating show featured in the film is called “The Honey Pot.”

Dawn’s sister says casting auditions for the show are in Dallas. It’s about 90 miles from Honey Grove to Dallas.

Shiner and Lone Star beer

After Dawn’s “Honey Pot” audition, she and her sister visit a local bar.

A Shiner bottle is seen in the frame and Dawn pays for a Lone Star beer. Shiner beer is made in Shiner, Texas, and Lone Star is brewed in Fort Worth.

Twin Peaks

In the same bar scene, two guys unsuccessfully try to pick up Dawn and Emily. One guy says they “could do better at Twin Peaks” — the sports bar chain founded in Lewisville in 2005. A majority of Twin Peaks’ locations are in Texas.

Paris, Texas

There are a few shots of the real Paris, Texas in the movie, mostly in a montage as the show contestants drive through town.

Paris’ Grand Theatre, L.O. Hammons Men’s Store, Paris Lanes, Dr. Pepper Mural and mini Eiffel Tower are all seen in the montage.

Texas singers

Several Texas-born singers are featured on the movie’s soundtrack, including Buck McCoy (Grand Prairie), RaeLynn (Baytown) and Harper Grace (McKinney).

The Alamo

When “Honey Pot” bachelor Trey (Pierson Fode) meets with the show’s contestants, Nashville native Lexi (Madison Pettis) says “there’d be no Texas without Tennessee” since they “volunteered” at the Alamo.

Trey replies that David Crockett was his hero as a kid, and Lexi agrees. Lexi then tells Trey to “Remember the Alamo” as Dawn walks up and says, “You do know we lost at the Alamo, right?”

The Battle of the Alamo took place from Feb. 23 to March 6, 1836. Led by Antonio López de Santa Anna, the Mexican army aimed to end the Texas revolution. By the 13th day of battle, all Alamo defenders were killed, including Crockett.

Dallas Cowboys

During the credits, certain characters (who will not be named for spoilers) are seen wearing Dallas Cowboys apparel in the crowd at a game.

There are no details on if this is a home game at AT&T Stadium, but one character is wearing a #88 jersey. Many Cowboys have wore that jersey, including Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin, Dez Bryant and CeeDee Lamb.

“The Wrong Paris” is streaming on Netflix.
