Grapevine High School marching band to play before Post Malone’s show this weekend
The Grapevine High School band is on their way to perform a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity ahead of Post Malone’s concert in Arlington this weekend.
D-FW radio station Mix 102.9 invited the band to perform this Friday, May 9 outside of AT&T Stadium for a pre-concert tailgate. Malone graduated from Grapevine High School in 2013 (though he himself was not in the band).
“For them to have something really good happen to them is awesome,” GHS band director James Rees said. “They’re great kids, and we want them to have a great experience.”
The Grapevine High School band is an extensive program of 150 students, private lesson staff, master class teachers and designers. They were recently in Dublin, Ireland for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and have even performed at the Carnegie Music Hall in New York. On top of football games and concerts, they also perform in competitions.
The students found out last week about the opportunity. Their reaction to the news has gone viral with over 600,000 views on Grapevine Edit’s Instagram page.
The band has less than a week to prepare five songs they have never played before.
The music directors had to get permission from Malone’s team to turn his songs into arrangements fit for a marching band. Within three days, they arranged music for “Circles,” “Sunflower,” “Rockstar,” “I Had Some Help” and “Congratulations.”
Post Malone plays Saturday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. as a part of his “Post Malone Presents: The BIG ASS Stadium Tour.” Other artists include Jelly Roll, Sierra Ferrell and Chandler Walters. Tickets are still available online.
