To become an American citizen, naturalization applicants must pass both an English language test and a U.S. civics test.

The U.S. civics test consists of 10 questions, and an applicant needs to get at least six correct to pass. The English language test is based on the applicant’s ability to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage. Naturalization applicants get two chances for each test.

To study for the civics test, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services provides a guide of 100 U.S. government and history questions. The questions focus on principles of American democracy, system of government, rights and responsibilities, American history (1800s, 1900s, Wars), geography, symbols and holidays.

According to the USCIS, 88 percent of applicants passed both tests on the first try in 2022. 97.5 percent were able to pass on the second attempt. However, data shows the civics test is harder to pass than the English language test.
