TCU baseball pulls away from Penn State in last two innings

TCU broke a 5-5 tie with four runs over the final two innings to beat Penn State 9-5 for a sweep of the nonconference baseball series Sunday.

The Horned Frogs (33-12) had 19 hits. Elliott Barzilli had four hits and knocked in two runs. Cam Warner and Evan Skoug each had three hits, and Josh Watson hit his 10th home run.

With the score tied 5-5 in the eighth, Ryan Merrill doubled, moved to third on an infield single by Warner and scored on an error.

The Frogs scored three runs in the ninth. Luken Baker and Watson singled. Barzilli’s single, Dane Steinhagen’s double and Merrill’s single brought in the runs.

Watson hit a two-run home run in the third inning. The Frogs scored two more runs in the fifth, with Baker hitting an RBI single and Barzilli a run-scoring double.

Frogs standout Mitchell Traver made his season debut, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out three in pitching the first two innings.

Preston Guillory was the winning pitcher, giving up one hit and no runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Texas Tech leads the Big 12 standings with a 17-4 record. Oklahoma State is second at 12-6, followed by TCU at 11-7 and West Virginia at 11-9.
