It's win or no NCAA Tournament this weekend for TCU women's hoops
This weekend will tell the tale of the TCU women's basketball season.
Once ranked in the Top 25 after a 7-game winning streak in January, the Horned Frogs are on the bubble as far as the NCAA Tournament goes.
They'll have a chance to improve their resume on Saturday when they open up Big 12 Tournament play as the No. 5 seed against No. 4 seed Oklahoma at 11 a.m. on FSSW Plus at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.
A win against the Sooners would mean that the Frogs would advance past the Big 12 quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
TCU (18-11, 9-9) and Oklahoma (16-13, 11-7) split their season series with each team winning at home. Oklahoma won, 84-71, in Norman on Jan. 4, despite TCU leading after three quarters. TCU then won, 62-58, in Fort Worth on Jan. 27, despite Oklahoma leading after three quarters.
The Frogs, who last played in a conference tournament semifinal in 2011 at the Mountain West Tournament, have sputtered a bit since that win over OU, losing 3 of 9 and two in a row.
They're currently not projected to make the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN's Bracketology with Charlie Creme. Oklahoma is projected as one of the "First four out."
Baylor (2-seed in Lexington Region), Texas (2-seed in Kansas City Region), and Oklahoma State (9-seed in Albany Region) are the only Big 12 teams projected to go dancing, according to Creme.
A win would advance TCU to its first ever Big 12 Championship semifinal. The Frogs would face top-seeded Baylor, No. 8 seed Kansas State or No. 9 seed Kansas at 2 p.m. on Sunday on FS1. The Wildcats and Jayhawks play in the tournament’s first round on Friday night with the winner taking on Baylor in Saturday’s second quarterfinal.
