More than 300 cattle rescued from Central Texas property are safe
Volunteers with the Humane Society of North Texas were in custody of 338 cattle seized from a property near FM 933 and County Line Road in Hill County, according to authorities.
Some of the cattle were found deceased when workers arrived on the property and it is uncertain how many more may die, said Cassie Lackey, Humane Society spokeswoman.
"At least 15 were found to have recently died ranging in age from 24-hours-old to adult," Lackey said. "The vet is still assessing. There is certainly a possibility of humane euthanasia due to severe malnutrition. However, we will do everything in our power to stabilize these cattle."
A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Feb 16 to determine whether the cattle should be returned to their owner or remain in Humane Society custody, a news release from the Humane Society of North Texas stated.
Criminal charges could be forthcoming, according to authorities.
The Humane Society needs food for the undernourished cattle. To make a donation to assist with the care of the cattle, donate to the Equine & Livestock Fund listed on the Humane Society's website.
