ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin became a hero to animal lovers Tuesday when he rescued a dog off the streets of San Antonio.

McMenamin, who covers the Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA, chronicled the rescue with a series of posts on Twitter.

McMenamin found the dog “weaving in and out of traffic” on East Houston Street near the AT&T Center in downtown San Antonio around 12:30 p.m. The Spurs host the Cavs at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

That initial tweet has 200 retweets and over 800 likes (as of 3 p.m. Tuesday). And it helped McMenamin find Animal Care Services. Many on Twitter told McMenamin to keep the dog.

“For those telling me to keep him: I’d love to. But I’m on the road 150 days a year for work. I cannot own a dog,” he tweeted.

McMenamin tweeted a selfie with the furry, brownish-black, medium-sized dog relaxing in the back seat of his rental car. McMenamin was reaching out to the people of San Antonio to find a place to drop off the dog, who he quickly dubbed Buddy.

The clinic found a chip on Buddy so the story could have a happy ending. Even if saying goodbye was tough for McMenamin.

He tweeted out Buddy’s animal ID number and the location of the shelter.

“Anyone who fell in love with this dog like I did today and actually has the means to adopt him, here is his animal ID number and the location where they are taking care of him,” he posted. “If his owners aren’t tracked down through the chip, I hope someone in San Antonio can find him a home.”
