American Airlines plane makes emergency landing at DFW Airport after compressor fails
An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Wednesday night after a mechanical failure caused flames to come from the engine.
The Fort Worth-based carrier said there was a problem with the engine compressor on the left side engine but that the engine itself was not on fire.
“The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate on its own power,” said American spokesman Ross Feinstein.
The Airbus A321 was carrying 130 passengers and 6 crew members. The flight was canceled and passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and rebooked on Thursday flights, Feinstein said.
Flight 438 took off for Seattle at 10:51 p.m. and climbed to 3,000 feet when the compressor issue apparently occured. According to FlightAware.com, the aircraft quickly turned back to make the emergency landing at DFW Airport, safely landing at 11:11 p.m.
The 3-year-old aircraft had arrived from Phoenix earlier in the day.
