Blind German Shepherd and her seeing-eye dog seeking a forever family in Texas

Babs and Bart, two German Shepherds about 70 pounds each, were found together on the streets of Dallas about a year ago, according to their caretaker, Laura Cherry.

Babs is blind and Bart is her companion, her seeing-eye dog, Cherry said. When Dallas Animal Services found them they were together, Cherry, 31, of Denton, said.

Dallas officials discovered Babs had medical issues so they called DFW Rescue Me, an animal rescue organization with a special fund that addresses the medical needs of abandoned animals, Cherry said.

“The people with animal rescue saw she was in pain and they left it to us to take care of her medically — which we did immediately,” Cherry said.

It was determined that Babs had glaucoma, which caused her blindness, Cherry said. Babs has healed and is ready for adoption. But Babs and Bart are a package deal and whoever adopts Babs has to adopt Bart, Cherry said.

“It’s possible they had a family together and were not cared for or they bonded on the streets, we just don’t know,” Cherry said. “But now they are inseparable. They have bonded. I’ve taken them with me on vacation a couple of times and they stuck together like glue.”

Babs and Bart will be at the Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, looking for an adoptive family. They have each been vaccinated, and they are spayed, neutered and housebroken, Cherry said.

“They both have excellent manners,” Cherry said. “They are child friendly and well-mannered and you honestly don’t notice their size. And they enjoy car rides as long as they are together.”
