Dak Prescott breaks Dallas Cowboys franchise record, passing Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott set the franchise record for most passing yards in a career Sunday at AT&T Stadium, surpassing Tony Romo’s mark of 34,183.

Prescott broke the record on his first attempt of the third quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles, hitting George Pickens for a 9-yard completion to get to 34,192. He finished with 354 yards Sunday to push his career total to 34,378.

Prescott tied the record in the first half with 159 passing yards, though the Cowboys trailed the Eagles 21-7 at the break.

After the Cowboys rallied for a 24-21 win, Prescott talked about setting the record when the team was trailing.

“They did the whole deal during the timeout break and some of the guys were giving congratulations, and I’m like ‘No. Whatever. We’ll celebrate this after the win. I don’t want to hear anything about that right now,’” he said. “Now I can enjoy that a little bit, reflect, smile and laugh.

“I can tell you that initially when I looked up there and saw that, there was a little emotion that hit me that I damn sure wasn’t ready for and didn’t know that would come. That’s why I countered that with anger. [I’m] blessed and thankful. It’s the result of a lot of hard work, good people around me, great teammates that care, and we’re going to keep going.”

Prescott’s day continues his ascent up the Cowboys’ all-time leaderboards. He ranks No. 1 in completions (3,056) and is second in touchdown passes (236) to Romo (248).

Entering Sunday, Prescott had thrown for 2,587 yards this season, good for sixth-best in the NFL, with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Prescott started his career with the Cowboys as a fourth-round selection in the 2016 NFL draft, and after a preseason injury to Romo, Prescott got the starting job and began his 10-year stint as the starter for the Cowboys.
