Cowboys’ busy day includes adding TCU’s Olonilua to practice squad, acquiring WR Turner
It’s a busy day of transactions for the Dallas Cowboys.
From filling out their practice squad to waiver claims, the Cowboys are finalizing their roster for the upcoming season.
Among the notable transactions Sunday include re-signing former TCU running back Sewo Olonilua to the practice squad and claiming wide receiver Malik Turner off waivers from Green Bay.
Olonilua joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, but didn’t make the final 53-man roster. But he’s a promising prospect who has the ability to play fullback and will continue that transition.
Other reported additions to the Cowboys’ practice squad included former defensive back Brandon Carr, who played with the team from 2012-16. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, teams are allowed to add veterans to an expanded practice squad that can have as many as 16 players.
The Cowboys have 15 as of now. Along with Olonilua and Carr, others include former North Texas DE LaDarius Hamilton; WRs Jon’Vea Johnson and Aaron Parker; DBs Luther Kirk, Saivion Smith and Chris Westry; LB Francis Bernard; DT Justin Hamilton; C Marcus Henry; and TE Cole Hikutini.
Turner, meanwhile, joins the Cowboys after spending the previous two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He was cut by the Packers earlier this week.
Turner is known for his special teams play, although he did have 15 catches for 245 yards and a touchdown last year for Seattle.
To clear a spot for Turner, the Cowboys cut veteran linebacker Joe Thomas. But Thomas can be re-signed on Monday.
The Cowboys had one player claimed off waivers. The Cleveland Browns claimed defensive end Joe Jackson.
