Cowboys cut former TCU RB Sewo Olonilua. Will he return to practice squad?

Former TCU running back Sewo Olonilua was among the players cut by the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday.

Olonilua hoped to make the final 53-man roster as the team’s fullback. Instead, he will be a strong option to return to the team’s practice squad, according to a source. Olonilua must clear waivers before re-signing with the Cowboys.

NFL teams had to trim their rosters to 53 players by 3 p.m. Saturday. Players who are cut can sign back to the practice squad at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Fellow TCU running back Darius Anderson was cut by the Cowboys on Friday.

Olonilua rushed for 537 yards and eight touchdowns for TCU last season. He also had 114 yards receiving, including one TD.

Olonilua’s best season came in 2018 when he rushed for 635 yards, including 194 yards in TCU’s Cheez-It Bowl victory over Cal. Olonilua was named the bowl game’s MVP.

Olonilua projects as a versatile player at the next level, capable of playing running back, fullback and tight end. He went undrafted but received $55,000 guaranteed from the Cowboys ($5,000 signing bonus and $50,000 base salary guarantee).

The Cowboys open the season at the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 13.

Iwuagwu cut

The Houston Texans cut offensive lineman Cordel Iwuagwu on Saturday.

Iwuagwu had a solid training camp, though, and a source said he’s expected to join the Texans’ practice squad.
