Dallas Cowboys cut one of the two TCU running backs on their roster
Darius Anderson’s stint with the Dallas Cowboys has come to an end. At least for now.
Anderson was among the players cut by America’s Team on Friday. It’s unclear if the Cowboys are interested in bringing Anderson back on their practice squad.
Another former TCU running back, Sewo Olonilua, remains on the roster. A source said the expectation is for Olonilua to land on the Cowboys’ practice squad if he doesn’t make the 53-man roster.
The Cowboys open the season at the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 13.
Anderson joined the Cowboys after going undrafted last spring. The Cowboys gave him $110,000 guaranteed ($10,000 signing bonus and $100,000 of his base salary). Along with Anderson, the Cowboys also cut TE Cole Hikutini, DE Joe Jackson, G Cody Wichmann and T Wyatt Miller on Friday.
Anderson rushed for 2,418 yards and 18 TDs in his college career. He earned the nickname “Jet” for his home-run plays, including a record-setting 93-yard touchdown run against Ohio State in 2018. He also rushed for a 70-yard TD against Texas in 2016 and a 77-yard run against SMU last season.
Olonilua, meanwhile, is hopeful to make the Cowboys as a fullback. He rushed for 537 yards and eight touchdowns for TCU last season. He also had 114 yards receiving, including one TD.
Olonilua’s best season came in 2018 when he rushed for 635 yards, including 194 yards in TCU’s Cheez-It Bowl victory over Cal. Olonilua was named the bowl game’s MVP.
