Dallas Cowboys

Why not Dez? Or Romo? TV’s Eric Taylor? Some wackier choices for Dallas Cowboys’ next coach.

The wait continues for the Dallas Cowboys to make official that the Jason Garrett era is over.

In the meantime, the guessing game as to who should replace Garrett as head coach has spanned the entire spectrum of candidates. But what if, however, Jerry Jones decided to really shake things up over at The Star with the next coach? I mean, someone really off the radar? Perhaps even a fictional coach?

Here are five choices that would have people talking (mostly in utter disbelief) if they were named the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys:

Jerry Jones, Cowboys owner

Look, this is probably (and sadly) not as far-fetched as we’d like to assume. Can’t you see Jones on the sideline, wearing a headset? He could finally show all of us what a football man he truly is.

Dez Bryant, former Cowboys receiver

Bryant, who is active on Twitter, joked a few days ago about coaching in the NFL. He worried that he’d probably get some calls from commissioner Roger Goodell for lack of sportsmanship.

Eric Taylor, Dillon Panthers

Sure, he’s a fictional character played by actor Kyle Chandler from the television series “Friday Night Lights.” So what? He’s Texan, he wins and he was a critics’ darling for a while.

Tony Romo, former Cowboys quarterback

This might not be all that wacky of an idea. Romo has intimated before that coaching could be in his future. Still, without any type of coaching experience, it would be a stretch. But it would be fun to have the Romo smirk staring at us from the sideline.

Jimmy Johnson, former coach

Why not get the band back together? The glory days of the Dallas 90s dynasty were helmed by Johnson, who famously clashed with Jones before departing after winning two Super Bowls. Yes, he’s 76. But he’s still got that hair.
