Was a Cowboys Ring of Honor bound Tony Romo ever going to play for another team?

On his radio show on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doubled down on a proclamation he made during the NFL Network’s “A Football Life” documentary on quarterback Tony Romo.

Jones said the team’s all-time leader passer was a lock to be inducted into the team’s hallowed Ring of Honor.

“The answer is that is, yes, he will be in the Ring of Honor,” Jones said emphatically. “Now, the details will follow.”

Jones said Romo’s lack of playoff success during his time with the Cowboys nor the prospect that he will never make the Pro Football Hall of Fame have no bearing on his decision. While Romo owns all of the Cowboys passing records, he has just one playoff win in four playoff appearances as starting quarterback from 2006-2016.

Romo will join Don Meredith and Don Perkins as the only members of the Ring of Honor without a Super Bowl title during their time with the Cowboys.

Jones said Romo is deserving because of his distinguished career representing the Cowboys as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

“Tony was magnificent for this franchise during his career,” Jones said. ”And he elevated the franchise, and that’s what the Ring of Honor is about. Certainly, he’s got to be a great player in mind, but they have to do something that pushes, takes the step up for the franchise. While there wasn’t a Super Bowl there, I think he’s one of the best at his position. He was unique. He is unique now. He’s as quick and articulate as anybody I’ve ever been around.”

Jones’ feeling on Romo going into in the Ring of Honor comes as no surprise, especially since he announced it on the Romo documentary.

What’s also true is that Jones is disappointed in how Romo’s came to an end. He has stated on a number of occasions that his biggest regret is not getting to a Super Bowl with Romo at quarterback. He believes Romo was good enough to get there but the Cowboys didn’t always put together a good enough team.

“First of all, you’ve heard me say this. If I had to listen my number one disappointment since owning the Cowboys, it would be not to have gotten Tony Romo to a Super Bowl,” Jones said. “He’s deserving of it. He’s that caliber of quarterback.”

And when Romo got hurt in 2016 and coach Jason Garrett handed the starting job over to then-rookie Dak Prescott, Jones remained one his biggest supporters.

After much consternation, Jones and the Cowboys released Romo in March of 2017 and he joined CBS as their lead NFL analyst after briefly considering offers from other teams, including the Houston Texans.

Jones, however, said he never worried about Romo playing for another team because it was never going to happen.

“I will just say it was never going to be anybody else,” Jones said. “We’ll leave it at that. He was never going to play for anybody else.”
