NBA great says Dallas Mavericks didn’t give GM Nico Harrison a fair chance

Golden State Warriors great Draymond Green was not a fan of the firing of Dallas Mavericks general manger Nico Harrison, which was announced on Tuesday.

Green, a four-time NBA champion, said on his podcast “The Draymond Green Show” that the move was unfair to Harrison.

“The team that Nico constructed to go win a championship hasn’t been on the court,” he said. “So I find it crazy that everybody's just going to act like [injured guard] Kyrie Irving is this easily replaceable guy. Do you see the Indiana Pacers without Tyrese Haliburton? They look like a completely different team.

“... AD [Anthony Davis], for the better part of the last two years has been extremely healthy before getting to Dallas. Kyrie Irving since being in Dallas has been pretty healthy, so miss me with the injury history stuff, and going back 10 years and guys has been healthy the last two or three years. I don’t buy that. And y’all just wanna go point the finger at Nico because that was a storyline, now let’s make that a storyline again. That [expletive] is wack to me.”

Injuries have been a specter hanging over the Mavs this season, especially with the team struggling at the guard position without Irving, which has in turn led to the Mavs having one of the league’s worst offenses.

However, even with Davis, the team has struggled this season (3-8 overall, 2-3 in games Davis played in), and Irving is returning from a torn ACL at 33 years old. It’s fair to wonder if either will be less injury-prone as their careers continue.

Irving is expected to be back near the end of this year or the start of 2026, and Davis could return from a calf injury as soon as Wednesday when the team plays the Phoenix Suns at 7:30 p.m. at American Airlines Center.
