Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field to open on time after fire damages retractable roof

The fire that sent smoke billowing Saturday afternoon from Globe Life Field will not delay the completion of the $1.2 billion future home of the Texas Rangers.

Manhattan Construction Co. said a limited area of metal decking will need to be replaced along with nearly 2,000 square feet of roof.

The first scheduled event at the Globe Life Field is a March 14 concert featuring Chris Stapleton and Willie Nelson. An exhibition game between the Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals is scheduled for March 23, and the first regular-season game is scheduled for March 31 against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Arlington Fire Department said the two-alarm fire was near the fifth floor and was started by sparks from a welder landing on combustibles stored below. Firefighters needed 37 minutes to contain the fire after first responding at 2:27 p.m.

No one was injured.

“The Arlington Fire Department has conducted significant preplanning and response training at the stadium through out the construction period,” the department said in a release. “The existing working relationship with Texas Rangers and Manhattan Construction helped facilitate a quick and effective fire containment and control operation.”
