Top 5 high school football games to watch around Dallas-Fort Worth in Week 10/Week 6

After a month-long delay, Class 6A and 5A schools, and TAPPS have begun playing football games. There are a ton of heavyweight matches to watch in Week 10/Week 6 of the season.

We dwindled down the candidates to these 5 best games in DFW:

1. Grandview (7-0) at Glen Rose (8-0)

7 p.m. Friday

The Zebras and Tigers meet more than a month after their Week 4 matchup was canceled because of COVID-19. The Week 4 contest introduced two of the best teams in the state.

Six weeks later and the only thing that has changed are records.

Grandview, the two-time 3A D1 state champ, is No. 2 in both the area and state rankings. Since the Week 4 game was postponed, the Zebras have outscored their four opponents 271-35 with an average of nearly 70 points per game. This includes a 91-0 win over Dallas A-Plus Academy on Oct. 9

The Zebras are led by do-it-all quarterback Dane Jentsch, who can burn any defense with his arm and legs, but also plays stellar defense himself. He’s been voted state-title game offensive and defensive MVP each of the past two seasons.

Glen Rose hasn’t started 8-0 in a long time, but the Tigers were awarded a win last week when a district game with Venus was ruled a forfeit. The Tigers have scored 40 points in six of their seven games, including 47-0 vs. Hillsboro on Oct. 16.

The Tigers, No. 9 in 4A D2, are averaging 420 yards per game with 223 coming on the ground. Dual-threat QB Austin Worthen has accounted for over 2,300 yards and 31 touchdowns. Their defense will be tested, but the Tigers come in with six interceptions and 14 1/2 sacks.

PREDICTION: Grandview 35, Glen Rose 28

Offensive and defensive MVP of the game Grandview quarterback/free safety Dane Jentsch (3) scores another touchdown during the second quarter of a conference 3A division I State Championship football game at AT&T in Arlington, Texas, Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019. 2. Midlothian (3-0) vs. Colleyville Heritage (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday (Mustang-Panther Stadium)

It’s the home opener for Heritage, which is coming off a thrilling comeback victory in overtime over Richland 48-42.

Running back Braxton Ash ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns and QB AJ Smith-Shawver threw for 297 yards and three scores. Wide receiver Hogan Wasson caught 11 passes for 107 yards and a TD.

In two games, Smith-Shawver is averaging over 300 yards passing and four TDs while Ash has rushed 39 times for 184 yards.

The offense is averaging 48 points and will go up against a stingy Midlothian defense, which is coming off a career night from defensive back Riley Angel.

Against Birdville, Angel had three picks, all in the second quarter, and a blocked kick and the Panthers beat the Hawks 49-14. Fun fact, Midlothian has scored 49 points in all three games this season while giving up less than 15 points per game.

Midlothian looks to start 4-0 for the third straight season while Heritage is searching for its first 3-0 start since 2012.

PREDICTION: Heritage 42, Midlothian 38

3. Denton Guyer (3-1) vs. Prosper (3-0)

7 p.m. Friday (Children’s Health Stadium)

It’s a matchup of two Top-15 teams in the state when No. 9 Guyer takes on No. 15 Prosper in 5-6A.

After suffering its only loss in Week 2 against Denton Ryan, Guyer has put up 56 and 55 points against Mansfield Lake Ridge and McKinney.

In four games, Texas A&M commit Eli Stowers has accounted for nearly 1,000 yards and 10 TDs. Byron Phillips Jr. has rushed 64 times for 451 yards and eight scores and Grayson Obara is averaging 24 yards per catch with five TDs.

Prosper is looking to start 3-0 for the third straight season. The Eagles are coming off a 30-20 victory over Little Elm. All three wins have come by 10 points or less.

PREDICTION: Guyer 42, Prosper 28

4. Colleyville Covenant (2-0) at FW Lake Country (5-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday

Covenant finally returns to Friday night lights. The Cougars haven’t played since Oct. 3 when it won a thrilling comeback over Lubbock Trinity 21-20. The Cougars scored 21 unanswered.

Now they face one of the more explosive offenses in TAPPS, the Eagles from Lake Country Christian.

The Eagles haven’t started 6-0 since 2009. They’re coming off a 62-14 win over Fort Worth Calvary. RB Hayden Whites rushed for 240 yards and three TDs.

In all five games, Lake Country has scored at least 42 points with a scoring differential of 244-29.

PREDICTION: Lake Country 42, Covenant 24

5. Frisco Lone Star (1-2) vs. Frisco Reedy (4-1)

7 p.m. Thursday (Ford Center)

After losing back-to-back games to start its season, Lone Star got back on track with a 73-21 victory over Frisco Heritage, but that came on Oct. 8.

The Rangers haven’t played since and face a hungry Reedy squad that’s looking to start district 3-0.

The Lions have won three straight by a score of 135-55. AJ Padgett leads the offense with 1,150 yards passing and 10 TDs. Jacob Smith has scored fives TDs on the ground and Jaylen Fuksa is the leading receiver with four TDs on just six catches.

The last time the two matched up, Lone Star beat Reedy 63-35 during the 2017 season.

PREDICTION: Lone Star 35, Reedy 31
