Sports Illustrated preseason Top 99 high school football prospects sees nine from DFW
Student-athletes from Florida and Texas are featured prominently in the Sports Illustrated Preseason 99, a ranking of the nation’s top high school football seniors that was released on Monday.
The Preseason 99 comes from SI’s watch list of 1,000 players that was unveiled last month. The 99 are the favorites for the 2020 SI All-American first team.
“Our ranking of the top 99 reflects where the game of football is going,” said SI All-American recruiting director John Garcia Jr. in a press release.
Florida leads the group with 16 players while Texas has 14, including nine from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. California and Georgia have nine apiece. North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Washington have six each.
Of the 99 high school football players, 75 have verbally committed — 74 to a Power Five school. Ohio State has secured the most with 10 commits. The Buckeyes are followed by Alabama (8), Clemson (6) and Georgia (5). Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Tennessee have four each.
Sports Illustrated ranks Gonzaga College High (Washington, D.C.) quarterback Caleb Williams as the No. 1 player in the nation. The 5-star Oklahoma commit is ranked as the No. 1 dual-threat QB in the country by 247Sports.
Fort Worth All Saints offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer is ranked the highest Texan at No. 5. Brockermeyer, who is the top-ranked 2021 player in the state and best OT in the nation according to 247Sports, is committed to Alabama.
Other Fort Worth area players on the SI 99 include Aledo’s JoJo Earle (LSU commit) and Brockermeyer’s twin brother, James, the top-ranked center, who is also committed to Alabama.
The candidates will be narrowed to 250 finalists and then a Postseason Sports Illustrated 99 from which the 25-member first-team SI All-Americans will be selected.
