John Walsh, who led Denton Guyer to two state championships, hired at San Marcos
Former Denton Guyer head football coach John Walsh has accepted the same position at San Marcos High School, Denton Record Chronicle writer Reece Waddell reported late Monday night.
“My family and I are extremely excited about our new chapter in the city of San Marcos. I personally am honored to be selected as the new athletic director and head football coach at San Marcos CISD,” Walsh said in a press release. “I am eager to put in place a formula that has proven to build a winning culture, and get this city crazed about Rattler Athletics. I promise there will not be a slow step taken and student athletes of San Marcos will be proud to Strike As One.”
Walsh, who was the only head coach in Guyer football history, resigned his post in March.
Rockwall’s Rodney Webb replaced him two weeks later.
Walsh had spent 14 seasons at Guyer, posting a 131-56 record with two state championships and four state title game appearances. Guyer went to three state title games in four years from 2010-13. The Wildcats won back-to-back championships in 2012 (vs. Georgetown) and 2013 (vs. San Antonio Brennan).
The Wildcats finished 14-2 last season with a return trip to the state final. They finished state runner-up in the Class 6A Division II title game vs. Austin Westlake.
For the Rattlers, they’ve gone 1-9 in back-to-back years while playing in District 26-6A, which is in Region IV. San Marcos went 10-2 overall and 5-0 in district in 2017.
Walsh’s youngest child, Maggie, plays volleyball and will be a junior at San Marcos. She was a key contributor for Guyer during last season’s run to the regional final - a first in program history.
She was first team all-district and voted team defensive MVP.
