State 7-on-7 tourney is latest Texas sporting event to canceled due to coronavirus
Texas high school athletics took another hit amid the coronavirus pandemic with the cancellation of the state’s 7-on-7 football tournament on Sunday, according to Bobby Burton of 247Sports.
Burton said in a tweet that he spoke with Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament executive director Doug Stephens.
The tournament was scheduled for late June at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
Southlake Carroll, led by top-ranked 2022 quarterback Quinn Ewers, reached the Division I championship last summer, where the Dragons fell to College Station A&M Consolidated, 37-32.
Mesquite Horn won the Division I consolation, 54-53 over Rockwall.
Sunnyvale won the Division II championship and Poth won the Division III title. Arlington and Arlington Lamar were other Fort Worth area teams playing in the championship bracket and a total of 11 teams were from Dallas Fort-Worth.
The UIL and TAPPS announced on Friday that the remainder of spring activities and all high school state championships have been canceled. It came a few hours following Gov. Greg Abbott’s announcement that schools would remain closed for the rest of the 2019-20 school year.
The other sports affected by the shutdown were UIL soccer, track, golf, tennis, softball, baseball, spring football and the UIL boys basketball state tournament.
On Friday and Saturday, coaches, athletes and teams said their goodbyes online after shorten seasons.
