Fort Worth North Side made history this season with its first playoff berth since 1979.
And a big reason for the Steers’ success was junior Da’Wain Lofton.
In the regular season, Lofton registered over 1,200 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns, and rushed for another 14 scores. Now he’s a first-team all-state wide receiver.
Lofton was voted to the Class 5A Associated Press Sports Editors all-state team Wednesday.
“It’s an honor,” said Lofton, who finished the year with 2,022 yards of total offense and 32 TDs. “I’m happy to know that all the hard work, dedication, countless hours and countless reps paid off. It’s truly an honor, but there’s still more work to be done.”
Head coach Joseph Turner heard about the news when a couple of his assistant coaches put him in a group text. Then he told Lofton when he brought him into his office to “sit down and catch up.”
“I can’t say if he’s the first to do it here. I know they had some great teams in the ’70s, but as far as I know, he’s the first player from North Side to be first team all-state,” Turner said. “Well deserved. Not another kid more deserving and it’s great to see his accomplishments and Da’Wain starting to get recognition.”
Lofton, who picked up offers from Kansas, Duke and Virginia Tech, also added over 500 yards on special teams returning kicks. In back-to-back games against Wylie East and Carter-Riverside, Lofton recorded over 400 yards receiving combined and eight total touchdowns.
“He was in shock and I still don’t think he understands the significance of being a first team receiver as a junior. It’s huge and guys wish for it,” Turner said. “But he knows there’s more work to be done. He has bigger things now other than all state.”
Three from Colleyville Heritage (Gavin Byers, Luke Mabe, Chase Allen) and three from Crowley (Vontrez Jackson, Evertt Preston and Bryson Bonds) were named first team.
Burleson senior Klaus Shoenborn and Aledo senior Aidan Hayes were also named first team all state.
Frisco Lone Star WR Marvin Mims was voted offensive player of the year. Mims, who signed with Oklahoma on Wednesday, finished the year with over 2,600 yards receiving, a state record for a single season. He also finished with the most receiving yards in a career in state history.
Here is a look at the Class 5A all-state football team, as voted by the media. Stats are based on regular season only.
