The Pioneers scored on their first seven possessions as part of an offensive and defensive show, posting a 56-7 lead by halftime.
Even when Boswell (1-2, 1-0) didn’t score and was forced to punt for the only time in the half, they pinned the Rangers at their own 1. On that Chisholm Trail series, Eli Mbale for Boswell registered a 25-yard pick-6.
Boswell also scored on a blocked punt in the end zone with Luke Moniak recovering the ball after Terrance Wair blocked the kick.
With the return of Brayden Thomas as QB for the Pioneers following an injury in their first scrimmage, the Pioneers’ passing game clicked. Thomas finished 9-12-0 and 67 yards passing with two scores. He ran for anther two scores.
The biggest beneficiary of Thomas’ passes was Brandon Chatman. He finished with five receptions for 38 yards and two scores (19- and 6-yard catches).
When Chisholm Trail (1-3, 0-2) showed life early, it was Jasson Carey taking a Garrison Haskell pass for 70 yards in the first quarter.
Game was over when: Boswell’s score on the blocked punt late in the second quarter seemed to be the nail in the coffin. They added the interception return after that score, making it the Pioneer win a foregone conclusion.
Play of the game: Derrick Berry’s 46-yard TD run in the first quarter was the spark-type play that ignited the rout.
Offensive player of the game: Boswell’s Berry finished with 177 yards and two scores as a result of hard running in limited space. Chatman, though, caught the two scoring passes and had a 54-yard punt return for a score called back.
Defensive player of the game: Pioneer linebacker, Luke Moniak, was in on several big tackles for loss in addition to the recovery in the end zone for a score.
Unsung hero of the game: Camron Hurst scored on a 58-yard run and had an interception for Boswell. He ran the ball just four times for 71 yards.
Moment of the game: Chisholm Trail’s 70-yard scoring pass from Garrison Haskell to Jasson Carey could have been the signal of the Rangers’ run at the Pioneers. The score pulled the Rangers to a 21-7 deficit.
Stat of the Game: Boswell punted just twice in the game. They scored in most every facet of the game.
Big picture outlook: The return of Berry and Thomas to the Pioneers’ offense showed Boswell is ready for the district schedule, picking up where they left off in last year’s strong season.
What’s next? Boswell (1-2, 1-0) District 3-5A will play at White Settlement Brewer on Friday at 7 p.m. Chisholm Trail (1-3, 0-2) will have a bye week before hosting Brewer on Oct. 5.
