Southlake Carroll claims District 5-6A title with victory over Hebron

In the Distrct 5-6A championship game Friday at Dragon Stadium, Southlake Carroll’s Audricke Gaines rushed for 237 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-34 win against Hebron. His first score was a 21-yard run on the game’s first possession. Then the Hawks mishandled the kickoff and Carroll went 16 yards in four plays for a 14-0 lead on Jackson Davis’ five-yard TD catch from Mason Holmes. Joseph Angelone’s interception in the end zone for Hebron, kept it close after the Hawks fumbled on their first play from scrimmage. Derian Vaughn went 76 yards on the second snap after that. But Carroll never punted. And eventually, the Dragons led by as much as 45-21 after Gaines fourth touchdown run, with 2:10 left in the third quarter.

Key players: For Carroll, Jack Johansson rushed for 58 yards and two scores, and caught two passes for 19 yards. Carroll kicker Kole Ramage was 7-for-7 on extra points, and made a 50-yard field goal, and teammate Tre Sledge rushed 11 times for 85 yards. Derian Vaughn had a 74 yard touchdown run for Hebron, but he left the game late in the first half and never returned. Evan Powell caught and 11-yard touchdown pass and scored ona 3-yard run. Clayton Tune was 19-26 for 206 yards and a touchdown.

Key stat: Carroll rushed 53 times for 409 yards.

Records: Carroll 9-1, 7-0 5-6A; Hebron 7-3, 6-2.
