Brewer tops Haslet Eaton to reach playoffs

With a patient, grinding run game Friday night at Northwest ISD Stadium, White Settlement Brewer picked up the final playoff berth in District 6-5A with a convincing 48-14 win over upstart Haslet Eaton.

Brewer, making its second consecutive playoff appearance, will host Denton at 7 p.m. Thursday in the 5A Division I bi-district round.

Running backs Curtis Taylor and Christian Calton did most of the damage for Brewer (4-6, 3-4) as the offense rolled up 356 rushing yards.

Taylor had 14 carries for 114 yards, and Calton had nine carries for 86 yards with two touchdowns.

Bears quarterback Carson Ingram and running back Jarrett Morse also had two touchdown runs each.

Brewer’s defense, though, was stingy and Eaton never got into a positive rhythm.

The Eagles (3-7, 2-5), who needed a win to reach the playoffs in their first varsity season, got just one offensive touchdown, on a 14-yard run by running back Titus Swen in the second quarter.

Kick returner Tre King rolled up the right sideline for 95 yards and a touchdown late in the third quarter for the Eagles’ other score.

The Bears forced two turnovers, a fumble on a kickoff in the first half and an interception by defensive back Adrian Pena.

Eaton finished with 168 total yards and ran just 43 offensive plays compared to Brewer’s 64 (52 rushing).

Brewer had 477 total yards and mixed up its offense early to keep Eaton off guard.

The Bears scored on their first four possessions and had 18 first downs in the first half.
