No. 1 Aledo rolls past Justin Northwest in undefeated showdown

Aledo hadn’t lost a district game since 2007 — a run of 66 consecutive wins.

After an early scare, the Bearcats checked off No. 67 on Friday night.

In a battle of unbeatens, Aledo scored 41 consecutive points to defeat Justin Northwest 61-27 at Northwest ISD Stadium.

Aledo (9-0, 6-0) clinched at least a share of the District 6-5A championship, the team’s ninth straight year with a district title.

The Bearcats, No. 1 in the Associated Press Class 5A poll, made quick work of the Texans defense, going 70 yards on six plays with a 5-yard touchdown run by Michael Jordan at 10:24 in the first quarter.

Northwest (8-1, 5-1) fumbled on its opening drive, with Brannon Webb recovering, and Aledo went up 14-0 two plays later on Donnie Evans’ 19-yard touchdown run at the nine-minute mark.

The Texans scored the next 17 points, giving Aledo its first deficit in district play this season. Syrus Moore scored on a 59-yard run and Prince Mavula threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Leo Saldana for a 17-14 lead with 11:49 in the second.

Evans scored on a 22-yard run to give Aledo a 20-14 lead, but Northwest went back up 24-20 on Mavula’s 15-yard pass to Gavin Holmes with 4:59 in the half.

Aledo scored 21 points in the final two minutes of the first half with two touchdown passes from Dillon Davis, 18 yards to Logan Bridges and 40 yards to Hunter Rosson. Rhett Harris added a 55-yard interception return for a score to give the Bearcats a 41-20 halftime lead.

The Bearcats scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of the second half, capped by a 40-yard run by Davis, a 41-yard catch by Rosson and a 55-yard run by Evans for a 61-24 lead with 11:17 in the fourth.

Aledo rushed for 378 yards and gained 612 yards of total offense. Evans had 14 carries for 162 yards and three touchdowns.

Moore had 21 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown for the Texans. Holmes had 11 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown.

In the second half, Aledo held Northwest to three points, 8 yards rushing and 143 yards of total offense.
