Longtime soccer guru Mike King retires. His assistant named new coach at Timber Creek

Keller ISD announced on Wednesday that Timber Creek assistant girls soccer coach Taylor May will take over the program full-time, replacing longtime coach Mike King, who retired.

“I am excited for the opportunity to continue the success that Timber Creek women’s soccer has been able to accomplish since its opening,” May said.

May has been with Timber Creek for six seasons.

The Lady Falcons went 10-8-3 overall and 5-6-1 in District 5-6A this year before the season was canceled by the UIL amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Coach May has a high soccer IQ, a keen eye for in-game strategy and brings to the role an outstanding ability to connect with student-athletes and motivate them toward success,” Keller ISD Eric Persyn athletic director said in an email. “We are confident that coach May is the perfect individual to maximize the potential of our Falcons girls soccer student-athletes.”

May was a high school soccer standout at Nolan Catholic and Colleyville Heritage, where she graduated in 2005. During her time at CHHS, the Lady Panthers won a district title and May was a team captain.

She was named all-district and all-state, and was a member of the Star-Telegram all-area team as a senior.

May played one season at Texas Tech.

“This move allows me to put my own touch on the program and push us to achieve even more,” she said.

King won 412 career games in more than 25 years, which included stops at Burleson and Crowley. In 2019, he was selected to the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Hall of Honor.

He arrived to Crowley as the girls coach in 1998 after spending his first three years as the boys coach at Burleson. During his tenure, the Elks made the playoffs three times and reached the regional quarterfinals in 1994.

He won over 200 games with Crowley, where he spent 11 seasons. The Lady Eagles went to the regional quarterfinals seven times and the regional tournament three times.

King began the Rex King Memorial soccer tournament eight years ago in honor of his father, who died in 2011 of cancer, and the tournament bearing his name is a fundraiser for Community Hospice of Texas.

Over the years, the tournament has raised over $100,000 for the Community Hospice of Texas in Fort Worth.
