Weatherford football coach leaves for Class 4A Fort Worth-area district champion
Alvarado ISD announced that Weatherford head coach Aubrey Sims will be recommended as the Indians’ next head coach Friday.
Sims will be formally recommended at Alvarado ISD’s next board of trustees meeting Monday, March 16.
He replaces Casey Walraven, who left to become the next head coach at Hutto, a Class 6A Austin area school.
Walraven built Alvarado into a Fort Worth-area Class 4A power. The Indians have made consecutive trips to the regional finals, where they fell to Celina, a state power. They tallied a 25-2 overall record during that span with one of the highest scoring offenses in Texas.
Sims, an Alvarado alum, led Weatherford to a 1-9 record in 2025, and the team finished winless in District 3-6A. The Roos last made the playoffs in 2021, Sims’ first year leading the team. During that season, Weatherford beat North Crowley en route to a 6-1 district record.
Sims will take over an Alvarado team that has state championship potential. Before Weatherford, he had stints at Grandview, Snyder and Iowa Park. He led the latter to a state semifinal appearance. He took over at Weatherford for Billy Mathis, who departed for Brock.
