Detroit Pistons All-Star guard Cade Cunningham had his jersey retired by Bowie High School in Arlington on Wednesday.

The ceremony took place in the Bowie basketball gym the day before Cunningham and the Pistons play the Dallas Mavericks at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at American Airlines Center.

Cunningham played at Bowie for two seasons before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida for his junior year. He starred in college at Oklahoma State on his way to becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Cunningham spoke during the ceremony about what the honor meant to him.

“This is a lot. I wasn’t planing on crying,” Cunningham said. “I was here what felt like two years ago. It’s crazy, 2018, it’s about seven years ago now, but I was just in the school, just walking halls, just playing here. I just had a dream. I just wanted to be great. I wanted to help my family.

“Being from Arlington is something I’m very proud of, and to be in the rafters. This is special. I appreciate the amount of love and support that I’ve gotten from my city since I’ve been in the NBA, it means a lot. Every time I come back home, I’m just overflowed with love and support, and it means a lot, for real, to me and my family.”

Cunningham has helped lead the Pistons back to NBA relevance. Detroit leads the Eastern Conference at 21-5, and Cunningham is averaging 27.1 points and 6.0 rebounds and ranks second in the NBA with 9.2 assists per game.
