Brian Gosset: Biggest things from Week 4 of the Fort Worth-area high school football season
Week 4 has already come and gone as Fort Worth-area teams continue their march this season. A lot of action took place with impressive wins and big upsets, plus top recruits proving why they’re some of the best in the state.
Check out the best of the best from the third week of the Texas high school football season.
Best win
Boswell 45, Euless Trinity 26
It’s unclear when the last time Trinity started a season 0-4, but that happened Friday night after the Pioneers beat the Trojans at home, behind it’s potent rushing attack of Sawyer Farr and Ezra Carter.
The two combined for over 270 yards on the ground with 190 coming from Carter.
Farr accounted for three rushing TDs, including from 28 and 44 yards, and added one passing score to help push Boswell to its first 4-0 start since the 2017 season.
Boswell trailed 26-24 after the first drive of the third quarter, but the Pioneers would go on to score 21 unanswered points with two touchdowns from Farr and one by Carter.
Aside from holding Trinity scoreless for much of the second half, the Boswell D also got a defensive touchdown in the second quarter from Jaedon Langley and a fourth-quarter pick by Nick Hawthorne.
Biggest upset
Crowley 31, Weatherford 17
The Crowley Eagles entered Friday’s game looking for their first win of the season while Weatherford was in the Class 6A area rankings and looking to stay undefeated at 4-0.
But Crowley upset the Kangaroos and got the upper hand in District 3-6A with an impressive 14-point victory.
The Eagles led 17-3 at halftime before Weatherford scored twice in the third quarter to even the score at 17. However, Crowley finished off the Roos with two touchdowns in the fourth to pull away.
Weatherford came in having scored at least 38 points in its first three games of the season.
Top recruit
Jamel Johnson, Sr., DB, Arlington Seguin
Seguin came up short during a 35-27 loss against Mansfield Summit, but the 4-star Texas commit was doing work on both sides of the ball for the Cougars.
The Cougars got within a point of the lead on a 44-yard touchdown pass by Shawn Evans, with Johnson hauling in a 2-point pass. Johnson is No. 7 in the Star Telegram Top 100. He’s also the No. 14 ranked Class of 2023 safety in the country, according to the 247Sports composite.
Johnson started the third quarter scoring on a 43-yard interception return while later adding a fumble recovery.
Seguin pulled to within 14-13 on a 57-yard scoring catch by Johnson from 3-star Washington commit Diesel Gordon (No. 27 in the S-T Top 100).
401 yards passing
Jake Wilson, Sr., QB, Byron Nelson
Wilson, No. 38 in the Star-Telegram Top 100, was at it again with 401 yards passing and four touchdowns in the Bobcats’ 55-15 district win over Keller Fossil Ridge.
Wilson is the No. 1 passer in the area through four weeks.
Byron Nelson led 7-6 after the first 12 minutes and then outscored the Panthers 27-3 to lead 34-9 at the half. Wilson threw three of his touchdown passes in the frame and pushed his season touchdown total to 14.
The Bobcats improved to 4-0.
206 yards rushing
James Johnson, Sr., RB, Mansfield
Legacy didn’t have an answer for Johnson, who rushed 18 times for 206 yards and four touchdowns in the Tigers’ 37-16 win Friday night, pushing their record to 4-0 for the first time since 2011 when they started 7-0.
Johnson averaged over 11 yards per carry. Johnson opened the scoring for Mansfield with a 63-yard run late in the first quarter. He also added a TD from 51 yards.
Through four weeks, he’s rushed for 691 yards and seven touchdowns. Johnson has hit the 100 yard mark in all four games and is averaging 172 rushing yards per contest.
214 yards receiving
Malachi Cunningham, Fr., WR, Cleburne
Fresh off a defensive player of the week award where he had two interceptions and a fumble recovery against Killeen in Week 3, Cunningham was at it again only this time on the offensive side.
Cunningham only made four catches, but he went for 214 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-26 loss to Granbury.
Do the math, Cunningham averaged 53 yards per catch.
