When Euless Trinity and Boswell met Friday night, the two teams couldn’t be further apart record wise. Trinity was 0-3, but played a tough non-district schedule with losses to Prosper, Rockwall-Heath and Marcus.

Meanwhile Boswell was 3-0 for the first time since 2017 and came in averaging over 45 points per game.

Boswell quarterback Sawyer Farr is a Texas A&M baseball commit, but the Aggies may want to consider him for their football team after the game.

Farr rushed for three touchdowns and threw for one more as Boswell defeated Trinity 45-26 in a District 3-6A opener at Pioneer Stadium.

“He is such a special kid. He’s committed to a D1, high level world series baseball program and still comes out at QB and does what he does, and plays with reckless abandon,” Boswell coach John Abendschan said. “He’s a leader, he learns from his mistakes and he throws an unbelievable ball.”

Boswell had lost to Trinity, 55-20 and 63-0, during the last two meetings.

Holding on to a 31-26 lead, Ezra Carter, No. 39 in the Star-Telegram Top 100, busted out a 33-yard run for Boswell to the Trinity 28. Three plays later, Farr (No. 90) scored from the 4 to up the margin to 12 with 6:30 left in the game.

“We always have the read-option in our back pocket. Ezra is such a force that they have to key in on him and when the counter is working and then that end started chasing us down and it was wide open,” Abendschan said.

Nick Hawthorne picked off a Trinity pass and Carter added an 18-yard TD run.

Carter finished with 25 carries for 190 yards.

Trinity (0-4, 0-1) took the second half kickoff and grabbed a 26-24 lead after a 7-play, 74-yard drive. Gary Maddox rushed for 28 yards on the first play and Ethan Williams hit Jordan Brown on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was tipped and missed, and Trinity led 26-24.

Boswell (4-0, 1-0) went down and scored to answer Trinity. On the read option, Farr broke to the right side and turned on the gas for a 44-yard touchdown while diving for the plyon. The Pioneers led 31-26 with 7:46 left in the third quarter.

Farr had 87 yards on six carries and threw for 139.

“We were trying to go tempo on them. They were getting tired and swapping sides so they were gassed by the end of the game so we had the upper hand,” Farr said. “Early in the game, we like to run it right down the gut with Ezra and he does a really good job at that and then they start to focus on him and that’s when they like to give me the ball so it pig backs off the o-line and Ezra.

“I’m happy what they can do and it compliments my run game.”

Boswell was in Trinity’s territory on all five drives in the first half. The Pioneers scored four times.

Boswell picked up 32 yards on the first play from scrimmage on a Farr pass to Kairel Robertson, but Trinity clamped down and forced a turnover on downs. The Trojans responded with an 8-play, 64-yard drive that featured seven runs, six from Maddox.

Then Williams dumped it off to Maddox on a screen and No. 3 did the rest for a 34-yard score to give Trinity a 7-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.

Maddox finished with 180 yards rushing for Trinity.

Boswell came right back and marched down field capped off with a Farr 6-yard touchdown to Ty Dauer to tie it at 7 at the 4:13 mark.

Trinity regained the lead six plays later on a 23-yard run by Williams, but the extra point was missed and the Trojans’ lead stood at 13-7 with 2:27 left in the quarter.

Boswell answered with its first lead after Farr called his own number with a 28-yard touchdown run right up the middle of the Trinity D and after the kick, it was 14-13 Pioneers late in the first.

Trinity went three-and-out on its ensuing drive and after a fair catch interference, Boswell was set up at the Trojans 39. However the Trojans came up huge to force a punt.

But on the next offensive drive for Trinity, Boswell 3-star defensive end Jaedon Langley came through the line and jarred the ball loose from Williams. After several bounces and kicks, and a loss of 30 yards, Langley eventually picked it up from the 8 and scored to extend the lead to 21-13 in the second quarter.

“They were always bigger, strong and faster than us, but tonight we just came out and were more prepared. I’m happy the way we played,” Farr said. “The defense showed up and made some big plays in the second half and the offense put it together.”

Langley has offers from SMU and Texas Tech.

Williams added his second TD run, from the 5, to pull Trinity within 21-20 before Eric Trejo kicked a 20-yard field for Boswell to give the Pioneers a 24-20 halftime lead.

The Trinity D came up big again after Farr hit Gage Ellis for 23 yards to the 1 for a first-and-goal, but the Trojans got two tackles for a loss and forced Boswell to settle for three.

“Two years ago, Trinity beat us 63 nothing on this field and they were all sophomores and freshmen and they felt that sting. They were a part of that and they didn’t go anywhere. They hung in here. They lifted and worked in the summer and this mindset,” Abenschan said. “I’d love to take credit for it, but these kids are awesome.

“But it’s only step number one. This was a big win for us, but there’s a bunch left.”
