Baseball/Softball Recap (5/7): Boswell rallies past Byron Nelson, Aledo teams sweep and more

Boswell 12, Byron Nelson 6
Sawyer Farr sparked a six-run fourth inning and the Pioneers defeated the Bobcats in Game 2 to complete the sweep in their Class 6A Region 1 bi-district series on Saturday at Boswell.
Boswell (20-8-2) won 9-2 during Friday’s Game 1. The Pioneers will face Wolfforth Frenship in the next round.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double from Chase Plowman.
Byron (14-11-1) regained a 4-2 lead in the top ofthe second with a two-run single from Michael Schultze, who scored one batter later on Troy Romero RBI single to right.
Boswell starter Brady Miller ended the top of the fourth with a strikeout with runners on the corners and the Pioneers started their fourth inning with the bases loaded.
Farr then hit a fast ball to right center to clear the bases and Boswell led 6-4. The lead grew to 9-4 with RBIs from Wyatt Fielding and Plowman.
The Bobcats got two in the fifth to cut it to 9-6, but Boswell made it 10-6 with an RBI single from Farr. Boswell scored on an error and Fielding drove in a run to make it 12-6.
Birdville 4, Azle 1
Birdville 2, Azle 1
Wichita State commit Hogan Shelby allowed four hits and struck out seven as the Hawks defeated the Hornets in Game 2 of their 5A Region 1 bi-district series at Saginaw.
Billy Spratt got the lone RBI for Azle with a single to center in the fifth. The Hornets (19-6) won 2-1 in eight innings during Friday’s Game 1.
All of Birdville’s (22-8-1) runs came in the second and third innings. Mason Siegmund hit a two-out single to left and Alex Showalter drove a pair of runs with a triple to center.
The Hawks rallied again with two outs in the third. Bynum Martinez singled to center and two batters later, Niko Ioannou drove in two with a double to right.
Martinez and Ioannou drove in both of Birdville’s runs during its 2-1 win in Game 3. Both came in the first inning as the Hawks got out to an early 2-0 lead.
Shelby went 2 for 4.
The Hornets’ came in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder’s choice.
Cameron Ward went 5 1/3 innings and allowed five hits with seven strikeouts. Isaac Phelan got the save with 1 1/2 innings pitched and no hits allowed. Phelan also pitched the seventh in Game 2 and picked up the save.
Martinez made a play at third and recorded the 5-3 double play to end the sixth. He made a nice catch in foul ground near the Birdville dugout to end the game in the seventh.
The Hawks will get Crowley in the second round.
Aledo 9, Denton 4
Aledo’s top of the lineup of Trace Mazon and Ethan Jaques combined for five hits and seven RBI as the Bearcats beat the Broncos in Game 2 and completed the sweep of their 5A Region 1 bi-district series.
Aledo (23-10) won 6-2 during Friday’s Game 1.
Jaques went 2 for 3 with a triple and four RBI. Mazon went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI.
David Jones had one RBI for the Bearcats, who scored four in the second and four in the sixth.
The Bearcats will face Burleson in the area round.
Crowley 8, FW Arlington Heights 5
Crowley 10, FW Arlington Heights 7
The Eagles won two games on Saturday to knock off District 7-5A champ and No. 1 seed Heights in their 5A Region 1 bi-district series.
In Game 2, Crowley scored five runs in the top of the seventh on six walks and two hit batters.
Jay Parrilla had two RBI. Colt Simmank went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Christian Arriaga, Nate Boultinghouse and Isaac Morales also drove in runs for Crowley.
Stinson Burns led Heights with two RBI.
During Crowley’s 10-7 win in Game 3, Parrilla drove in three runs while Arriaga, Jahdiel Melendez and Tristan Jones all had two RBI each. Jones went 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Crowley took a 4-1 lead in the third when Heights scored five times in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Javi Alvarez led Heights with three RBI.
Softball
Aledo 13, Mansfield Legacy 1
Macy Graf, Marissa Powell and Presley Hull homered as the Ladycats completed the sweep over the Broncos in Game 2 of their 5A Region 1 area round series on Saturday at Legacy.
Aledo (28-2), which won 11-1 during Friday’s Game 1, will play Colleyville Heritage in the regional quarterfinals.
Hull, who had three RBI in Game 1, led off the top of the second with a homer to left. Lucy Ballard led off the Legacy second with a double and scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
Graf singled in the third and scored on a Marissa Powell double to left. Powell scored on an error and Ana Flores drove in Madysen Boutwell to give Aledo a 4-1 lead.
After three straight singles in the fourth, Powell singled in Claire Byars to give Aledo a 5-1 lead. Two errors on the next batter made it 8-1. Graf and Powell hit back to back homers in the sixth and Texas Ray and Boutwell added RBI singles in the seventh.
Graf and Powell each had three hits for Aledo.
Brenlee Gonzales allowed three hits and struck out eight.
Justin Northwest 11, Saginaw 1 (6)
Josie Copeland went 4 for 4 with a home run and the Texans went on to beat the Rough Riders in Game 2 to complete the sweep in their 5A Region 1 area round series.
Northwest (26-7) will play Burleson Centennial in the regional quarterfinals. The Texans beat Saginaw 23-1 in Game 1.
The Texans scored three times in the third and fifth innings. Abi Young hit an inside the park homer, finished 3 for 3 and drove in five runs.
Maddy Moors drove in Emily Hann for Saginaw in the top of the first inning.
Ally Hinojosa allowed three hits in five innings for the Texans.
Burleson Centennial 3, Richland 2
Kylie Barnes capped a three-run third inning with a two-run double to center and then threw out a runner at home as the Spartans defeated the Royals in their one game 5A Region 1 area round series at Workman Complex in Arlington.
Centennial (25-7) will play Northwest next.
Richland ends at 22-8-1.
Centennial pitcher Bailey Lindemuth, who also leads the Fort Worth area with 19 homers, and Richland pitcher Jacey Lees went back and forth to keep the game scoreless through the first two innings.
Then the Spartans loaded the bases in the third and Lacie Mendez hit a 3-2 pitch to left for an RBI single and 1-0 lead. Barnes followed with a two-run double.
A half inning later, Richland nearly scored, but Barnes’ throw from right field got the runner out at home with Madelyn Hickey applying the tag. Hickey also caught a runner stealing second later in the game.
The Royals scored two runs in the fifth on a Madi McKay single to center. One run came across and an error scored a second.
But that’s all Richland would get as Lindemuth struck out six, and allowed six hits in seven innings.
Lees allowed eight hits and picked up her 200th strikeout of the season for Richland.
Hallsville 3, Joshua 2
Hallsville scored two in the top of the seventh to pull away from the Owls in their one game 5A Region 2 area round series at Crandall.
Joshua took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Catie Amador laid down a bunt and reached on an error. Zaidyn Streeter, who walked one batter before, scored all the way from first on the play.
Amador allowed seven hits and had 11 strikeouts. The sophomore finished with the second most strikeouts in the area.
