Grapevine routs Southwest as Mustangs remain undefeated in district play
Grapevine came into the game as the reigning district champs. Fort Worth Southwest came into the game wanting to flip the script and keep its district championship hopes alive by running the table.
The Raiders’ hopes were quickly diminished as the Mustangs raced out to a 23-0 lead in the first half and never looked back in en route to a 51-0 rout of the Raiders at Herman Clark Stadium on Friday night.
“I thought our performance in the first quarter was pretty good,” said Grapevine head coach Mike Alexander. “We came out with the right level of intensity.”
The Mustangs (4-2 overall, 3-0 in District 4-5A D2) scored on their first drive with a touchdown run by Parker Polk.
The Raiders (1-4, 0-2) managed a couple of defensive stands in the second quarter, however, the Mustangs still took a 30-0 advantage into halftime.
The Mustangs added 21 points in the third quarter, and just as he did to open the game, Polk scored the game’s final touchdown.
“I thought we played a strong third quarter and it enabled us to get a lot of guys in the fourth quarter to get some playing time that you know don’t always get in there,” Alexander said. “It was a good night for the Mustangs.”
While the score didn’t go in the Raiders’ favor, head coach Daron Franklin said he was still proud of his team.
“Throughout the game, the guys played with effort that represents Southwest,” he said. “We ran into a good Grapevine team. They just made a few more plays than us.”
