2021 HS football preview: Ranking the Top 10 Fort Worth area schools in 4A and below

We’re less than two weeks away from the start of the 2021 Texas high school football season.

In the next installment of our Fort Worth-area football preview, we take a look at the Star-Telegram Top 10 rankings in Class 4A and below.

Top 10 private school rankings

1. Argyle (Last season: 16-0)

The Eagles will be favored to win their second straight state title after beating Lindale, 49-21, in last year’s 4A Division 1 championship. 3-star offensive tackle Sheridan Wilson (Texas Tech commit) is among key returners, but Todd Rodgers will need to settle on a new quarterback.

2. Brock (Last season: 12-1)

Weatherford’s Billy Mathis replaces Chad Worrell at the helm and has 10 starters back with six on offense. Running back Kutter Wilson highlights the offensive unit (1,522 yards, 20 TDs). 6-5 tight end Nathan Jones (Abilene Christian commit) was an all-state selection.

3. Grandview (Last season: 11-1)

The Zebras have won 52 of their past 58 games, which included a trip to the regional semifinals in 2020. But a strong senior class graduated, including two-time state champ Dane Jentsch. This year’s team will be led by Kason English (887 yards receiving, 11 TDs) and Gavin Leftwich (1,455 yards rushing, 16 TDs).

4. Kennedale (Last season: 10-1)

Chalk down another district title for the Wildcats, who have won 52 straight games in district play with nine consecutive championships. Fourteen starters are back with eight on defense, including all-state defensive back Braden Waters (89 tackles, 18 for loss, 2 INTs).

5. Midlothian Heritage (Last season: 9-3)

The Jaguars will be young in 2021 with only seven starters back, including just three on offense. Defense will headline the program, led by linebacker Sam Sinclair and lineman Ben Eskins.

6. Springtown (Last season: 11-3)

The Porcupines reached the regional finals in 2020. Eight starters from that team return, including two-way star Matt Lockard, who caught 10 TD passes. Kyle Rose and Cody Brakeen highlight a strong offensive line.

7. Glen Rose (Last season: 9-2)

The Tigers enjoyed a district championship in 5-4A D2, but a first-round exit has them hungry. Ten starters return in 2021. Quarterback Hudson White (10 TDs) looks to take the team to another level.

8. Godley (Last season: 7-5)

The Wildcats finished second behind Glen Rose and won a playoff game. Eleven starters return with seven on defense. The team is led by all-around talent Drew Coleman who racked up 900 yards, 15 TDs receiving, 53 tackles, 2 interceptions.

9. Boyd (Last season: 8-3)

Eight starters return for the Yellowjackets, most notably Rendyn Lamance, who will line up at quarterback, but has the ability to beat you on the ground (2,600 yards total, 31 TDs). Dakota Barlow returns after starting last season on both the offensive and defensive line.

10. Peaster (Last season: 3-7)

Expect the Greyhounds to make tremendous waves in their second season of varsity. Eighteen starters are back with 10 on offense and eight on defense. Quarterback Gunner McElroy (2,000 yards total, 21 TDs) looks to build on an excellent year. Running back Tramar Gilbert (11 TDs rushing, 74 tackles, 3 sacks) is another key returner.
